Every month, Quick Reads shares practical study ideas to help IB Math AA HL students learn more effectively. This month, we explore how to use YouTube wisely and transform passive watching into active learning.

Watching Is Only the Beginning

YouTube has made learning more accessible than ever before. A good video lesson can simplify a difficult concept, help you revise before an examination, or provide a fresh perspective on a topic. However, watching a lesson is only the first step. Real understanding develops when you start solving questions on your own.

Is It Okay to Learn from Different Teachers?

Many students ask me whether they should watch videos from multiple teachers. There is nothing wrong with learning from different educators. In fact, since different teachers explain different topics in varying levels of detail, you may naturally find yourself learning from more than one source.

My suggestion is simple. While learning a new topic, try to follow one teacher's explanation consistently until you have built a comfortable understanding of that topic. Once your foundation is strong, exploring different explanations can broaden your perspective and deepen your understanding.

Practise Before You Progress

After watching a lesson, resist the temptation to jump immediately to IB past paper questions. Begin with the exercises in your school's prescribed textbook. These questions are usually arranged in a gradual progression, helping you strengthen your concepts step by step. Once you feel confident, challenge yourself with questions from online question banks before finally moving on to past papers.

Also, avoid checking the markscheme the moment you get stuck. Spend some time thinking, revisit the concept, and try another approach. Even unsuccessful attempts strengthen your problem-solving skills.

Learning Happens When You Think

Mathematics is not mastered by collecting videos, textbooks or question banks. These are valuable resources, but they are only tools. Progress comes from thinking carefully, attempting questions, making mistakes, learning from them, and trying again.

Every question you solve strengthens not only your mathematical understanding but also your confidence.
