Don't Let Your Calculator Do Your Algebra!
November 2026 Study Strategy
Arithmetic fluency is important, but mathematical fluency goes much further. Can you recognise common factors, simplify algebraic fractions, factorise expressions and decide when polynomial long division is necessary?
Explore how these algebraic skills help you tackle problems in Limits and Continuity and Integration. You may discover that the real challenge is not performing calculations, but recognising the mathematics behind them!
Don't Let Your Calculator Do Your Thinking!
September 2026 Study Strategy
If you have come to IB Mathematics from IGCSE, O-Level, MYP, or another programme where you used your calculator extensively, you may have developed the habit of reaching for it even for simple calculations.
But IB Math AA HL Paper 1 is a non-calculator paper, so mathematical fluency matters. Start practising simple calculations mentally, working with fractions and surds, estimating values, and looking for easy numerical relationships before reaching for your calculator.
Your calculator is a wonderful tool—but don't let it do the thinking that your brain can do!

August 2026 Study Strategy
Starting IB Math AA HL and confused about which graphing display calculator (GDC) to buy?
TI-Nspire CX II, TI-Nspire CX II CAS, Casio fx-CG50, Casio fx-CG100 or TI-84 Plus CE — which one is right for you?
In this month's Quick Read, we look beyond brand names and feature lists to consider what really matters for an AA HL student: mathematical exploration, graphing, Paper 3 investigations, ease of use, and confidence with your calculator.
Do you really need the CAS version? Is the most advanced GDC necessarily the best choice? And what should you consider before spending your money?
Read this month's Quick Read and choose your GDC thoughtfully.
Learning Beyond YouTube: Practise Before You Progress
July 2026 Study Strategy
YouTube videos can be an excellent way to learn a new IB Math AA HL topic, but watching a lesson is only the beginning of the learning process. Real understanding develops when you attempt questions yourself.
Instead of jumping directly to IB past paper questions, begin with the exercises in your school's prescribed textbook. These questions are usually arranged from basic to advanced, helping you strengthen your concepts step by step. Once you feel confident, challenge yourself with questions from online question banks before moving on to past papers.
Remember, mathematics is not mastered by watching solutions—it is mastered by thinking, attempting, and learning from every problem you solve.
